Tyrese Maxey poured in a season-high 38 points and the Philadelphia 76ers scored 13 consecutive points down the stretch to defeat the host Charlotte Hornets 109-104 on Saturday night.
Maxey made 12 of 23 shots from the field, including four 3-pointers, and went 8-for-9 from the free-throw line.
Anfernee Simons provided 19 points off the bench, Jaylen Brown scored 16, Jabari Walker had 12 and VJ Edgecombe finished with 10 points and eight rebounds. Dean Wade added 10 assists.
Reserve Grayson Allen’s season-high 27 points led the Hornets, who have lost three times in a four-night stretch. Brandon Miller added 24 points, Naz Reid had 14 and Moussa Diabate contributed 10, but Charlotte couldn’t capitalize on shooting 50% from the field.
While Brown returned after missing Friday night’s game with patellar tendinopathy, the 76ers played without LeBron James and Joel Embiid, who were held out for load management after Philadelphia beat the New York Knicks a night earlier. Maxey has scored at least 26 points in every game this season.
Philadelphia was nearly derailed by a scoring drought of nearly three minutes in the fourth quarter. The 76ers stayed within reach, but Allen’s 3-pointer made it 101-94.
The Sixers then scored 13 straight points, with Edgecombe’s 3-pointer at the 36-second mark followed by two free throws from Maxey to cap the run. Miller’s 3-pointer with seven seconds remaining pulled Charlotte within 107-104. Brown hit two free throws to seal the victory.
The 76ers are 3-0 in three road games this season.
After the Hornets built a 13-point lead, the 76ers used a 30-17 advantage in the second quarter to take a 57-54 halftime lead.
Allen’s five 3-pointers in the first half helped keep the Hornets within striking distance.
Dennis Schroder scored four points during Charlotte’s 10-2 spurt in the third quarter as the lead changed hands. The Hornets scored on three consecutive possessions and led 83-77 entering the fourth quarter.
That was more points than the Hornets scored in their 95-79 loss at Washington on Friday night.
However, aside from Miller’s 5-for-12 shooting from beyond the arc, Charlotte’s other starters combined to go 0-for-13 on 3-point attempts.
